The round table “Translation Forum Russia is back to Kazan” was held as part of the I Kazan International Linguistic Forum hosted by the Kazan Federal University.
Elena Kislova, the Chairperson of the TFR 2020 Organizing Committee, started off the event. In her speech, she spoke about the history of the international translation conference, its program, mission and significance. In addition, she stressed out the importance of the meetings with colleagues in our time, in the framework of which information is exchanged and joint projects are born.
Then, the head of the Tatarstan Investment Development Agency, Taliya Minullina, spoke about the role of translation in the economy, presenting the research of the translation services market in Russia and in the world. So, the head of the TIDA reported that last year the global market of language services was valued at 53.5 billion dollars. The market growth is expected to be 70 billion dollars by 2023. In her speech, Taliya Minullina emphasized the importance of the work of translators and its quality, in particular, for the Republic of Tatarstan.
“Thank you for choosing our republic as the venue for the forum. I believe this is for a reason. We intensively develop the mice industry and event tourism and hold many events, therefore the translation sector is very important for us. Last year, 200 high-level delegations from 40 countries visited the Investment Development Agency, where the investment potential of Tatarstan was showcased to them. We ourselves also took part in 75 major events abroad, organized and held 22 conferences, each with a different focus, in Tatarstan: in the field of construction, healthcare, public-private partnership, and finance. Last year, we won the right to host such events as the 1st ITS Central-Eastern Congress 2020, the 23rd TCI Network Global Conference, the WASOG 2023 World Conference on Sarcoidosis and Interstitial Diseases, the Vth Barproof Awards 2020. For all these events, and this is only a tithe of them, we will need translation services,” said Taliya Minullina.
The main expert in investments in Tatarstan has disproved the myth that the translator is a dying profession.
“There is an opinion that a translator is a dying profession. I’d like to say it is completely wrong. This is a growing market. In Russia, it is worth a little more than 300 million dollars. Today, we have registered 2,200 limited liability companies and 6 thousand individual entrepreneurs,” said Taliya Minullina and gave her opinion about what is important for the translator: from competencies to appearance and behavior.
Today, TFR is the largest conference in the translation industry in Russia and the CIS countries. Every year it gathers 300 to 700 participants, including the representatives of major international organizations.
Currently, the Tatarstan Investment Development Agency, together with the permanent organizer of the event, Business-Bureau of the Association of Interpreters, and the Kazan (Volga) Federal University, is hard at work on preparation of the XI International Translation Conference, Translation Forum Russia 2020, which is to be held on August 21 to 23, 2020 in Kazan.
