5 June 2013, Wednesday

Kazan’s Aeroexpress high-speed train connecting the city center and Kazan International Airport began operating on a full schedule today. The Aeroexpress train makes 18 trips daily (9 in each direction), starting at 7 a.m. at Kazan International Airport. The last train leaves the airport at 12:15 a.m.

Partial service of the Kazan Aeroexpress began on 22 May of this year. The line was built as part of the preparatory work done for the 27th Summer Universiade, which will begin in Kazan on 6 July.

According to Tatarstan Investment Development Agency (TIDA) Chief Executive Linar Yakupov, the Kazan Aeroexpress connecting Kazan and Kazan International Airport will play a key role in the economic development of the republic. The Aeroexpress line will also do much to further the development of Kazan Smart City.

“Kazan has become the fourth city in Russia to have high-speed train service to the airport,” he said. “The government’s investment in this project is a signal to investors that the state is interested in providing needed infrastructure. The launch of Aeroexpress service in Kazan is especially beneficial for the development of Kazan Smart City, which has a station on the Aeroexpress line. Kazan’s Aeroexpress runs past Kazan Smart City, meaning that passengers will be able to see the development of this important project with their own eyes.”

The service is provided by a Desiro Rus train, a specially-manufactured product of Siemens for the Russian market. The train servicing Kazan has been named Lastochka (sparrow) and has a capacity of 435 people.
